VOCABULARY WORDS
1. Great Schism of the West - A split in the Catholic Church that developed in the late 1300s when competing cardinals elected two new popes, each one claiming to be the real pope.
2. AntiPope - A cardinal that is not the true pope
3. Renaissance - is a period from the 15th to the 17th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and Modern history. It started as a cultural movement in northern Italy and cities like Florence, Genua, Bologna and Venice in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe.
4. Humanism - a Renaissance philosophy that placed an increased emphasis on the importance of the person
5. Indulgence - the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven by God. Indulgences can be obtained from the Church for ourselves or for the souls in purgatory through certain good works and prayers.
6. Counter-Reformation - the period in history in which the Church began a substantial program of reform which answered, or countered, the crisis begun by the Protestant Reformation
7. Evangelize - to proclaim the good news of Christ to people everywhere
8. Absolute Monarchs - the kings and queens of Europe in the 1600s - 1700s who had complete power over all aspects of the lives of their people, even religion the people were to practice
9. Scientific Revolution - A period where people began to seek a scientific understanding of the workings of the natural world.
10. Pope Gregory XV - He founded the Congregation for the Propagation of the faith.
